This year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Emily Jane Brontë (1818-1848), a British writer and poet in the 19th century, one of The Brontë sisters, who wrote a world famous book, Wuthering Heights. It's her only novel, which establishes her position in the world literature. Besides, 193 poems are created in Emily's whole life and she is considered as an author of superb talent.
Emily was born in a poor clerical family in 1818 and grew up at Haworth Parsonage in Yorkshire. In 1827, her mother passed away. Three years later, so did two of her elder sisters in short succession. Since then, Emily with her young brother and sisters dropped out and studied on their own. The Brontë sisters had to go out and make a living because of poverty. Their novels were finally published in 1847, Wuthering Heights wasn't appreciated by readers at that time, though. In 1848, her only brother Branwell died of illness. Then Emily quickly deteriorated for pity and sadness, and left the bleak world silently on December.
This is Emily's life, short and touching. And she wrote in her girlhood, sighing:
I am the only being whose doom
No tongue would ask, no eye would mourn
I never caused a thought of gloom
A smile of joy since I was born
In secret pleasure——secret tears
This changeful life has slipped away
As friendless after eighteen years
As long as on my natal day
无人过问,也无人流泪哀悼;
A poem named Haworth Churchyard is created by Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), a famous British poet and literary critic, mourning for her gone. It says:
She (how shall I sing her?) whose soul
Knew no fellow for might,
Passion, vehemence, grief,
Daring, since Byron died,
That world-famed son of fire——she, who sank
Baffled, unknown, self-consumed;
Whose too bold dying song
Stirr'd, like a clarion-blast,my soul.
备受挫折,默默无闻,自我毁伤;
……”
If we use a color to describe someone's life, then Emily's must be scarlet, extreme and fervent. She is just like a queen of the wild, lordly ,and lonely. She seems to be cold, but has deep passion inside. She is the fierce wind in winter with huge power smashing everything. Even so many years after her death, her only novel Wuthering Heights still infects thousands of people, sparkling in world literature.
Emily, may you rest in peace.
