Today, I’d love to share a book named A Man Called Ove. In Chinese translation, the name is related to suicide, which makes the book sound really tragic and miserable. But as an old saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.
A Man Called Ove was Fredrik Backman’s debut, which surprisingly brought him a huge amount of fame and money. The book has been translated into 25 different languages and become a bestseller around the world. In 2015, it was adapted into a movie which was nominated for the 89th Oscar Best Foreign Language Film Award.
In the novel, Ove is a pain in the neck for everyone, who is full of such prejudice that he considers those who don’t drive the same car as his are all dumb asses. In addition, he’s a dye-in-the-wood miser. However, such a stubborn and tough man with straight man cancer, offers all his softness to his beloved wife--Sonia. Even after she died of cancer, he tried to commit suicide six times. Fortunately, because of his neighbour Paweena, he didn’t succeed once. What’s more, Paweena even changed the rest of Ove’s miserable life--he was no longer a lonely old man abandoned by this world, as well as wanting to abandon the world.
Basically, it is totally a tragedy. However, Backman put a lot of laugh-out-loud details in the story. Such a book with tears and laugh, reality and memories, holds the magic that makes readers burst into both laughter and tears. Even after finishing reading, the waves in the heart still surge for a long time.
What I value most in this book is that, it gives readers a chance to take a glimpse of the inside world of those ordinary people with annoying traits. Backman’s novels often focus on those nuisances whose nice traits are often ignored. In his novels, the characters’ personalities are enriched as the stories develop, which makes us realize that people’s personalities are so complicated that we cannot judge a person merely by several little things. Only after we make acquaintance with him and get to know his past can we realize that a tough man could hold such softness, that a stubborn man could be so kind.
Maybe you are in the deep valley of your lifetime, or maybe you are busy and so restless. In that case, I think you can read this book concerning love and life and get to know an adorable but annoying old man called Ove.
