On December 6th, a thesis writing instruction lecture on the theme of "what professors might not teach you these years -- how to write a paper" was held by the student development center in student affairs department on the first floor of Bei Yue bookstore at 2pm. The chair invited Ye Qingna, the director of the editorial department of education and economy in the education school, to deliver a speech and was presided over by Liu Feng, an instructor of the center for learning and development of college students.
Ye Qingna unfolded the lecture from "the reasons for writing a paper", "what to write in a paper" to "how to carry out a literature work" and "how to write a paper". Miss. Ye introduced the theme of "why to write a paper" by asking questions. At the same time, with the help of memes and Internet jokes, she also illustrated the importance of papers humorously. As for the second part, in fact, what to write is to determine the topic of your paper. Miss Ye vividly compared different topics as "popular lover", "arranged marriage" and "object of desire" so that we could have a better understanding of this topic. Secondly, working on the literature was the most important way to write a good paper. Miss Ye showed the students how to use the electronic database resources purchased by the library as well as demonstrated the way to using the advanced retrieval function in the How Net. In the end, she also shared her own methods of making electronic document extract cards, which pointed out the direction for students to imitate predecessors and accumulate experience. Retrieval, reading as well as writing are not isolated. Miss Ye especially stressed to everyone that” you should retrieve, while reading together with writing”. Only in this way, can you write a high-quality paper.
After the foreshadowing of these three parts that were about motivation, topic selection and literature, the content of "how to write a good paper" was formally launched. Miss. Ye succinctly listed the six essential structural elements of a paper -- title, abstract, key words, introduction, literature review, references. She also gave detailed explanations respectively. "A good topic makes a half-good article." Miss Ye first stressed the importance of the article title. Title was the” advertising" of the paper. Whether readers were willing to accept this paper greatly depended on the "advertising". Most importantly, focus and conciseness were the necessary characteristics of an excellent title. Expect for these, she explained to students with examples that a really good title should have some bright spots which are original and not stereotyped, unique as well as absorbing. Abstract was a bridge connecting authors, editors as well as readers. At the end of the sharing, Miss Ye also put forward professional suggestions on key words, introduction, literature review and references.
When the lecture session was over, students were free to ask Miss Ye questions. In the face of one student's confusion over the boundaries of citation and plagiarism, Miss. Ye explained that it was OK to borrow the strengths from others in terms of framework and ideas, but it was also important to pay special attention when referring to specific content. Regardless of the "big" questions about academic trends or the "small" questions about how to find journals, Miss Ye patiently answered all of these questions. Atmosphere of the scene was lively.
The host expressed his thanks to Miss Ye and announced the successful conclusion of the activity. Xing Jiayi, from the school of mathematics and statistics of 2018, who had been listening attentively, said, "I had a lot of doubts about writing papers before. Thanks to the lecture held by Miss Ye, she really helped me. It was a rewarding trip."
