October 30, 2021 Liang Qingyuan

The Voice of CCNU On the afternoon of October 14 ,the Adaptive Education Counsellor Salon for freshmen was held in the University Students Activity Center 401.The salon was presented by Wang Li,the counsellor from the College of Foreign Languages in Grade 2021 and Don Mingyue, the counselor from the College of Computer Science, spotlighting on the adaptive education for freshmen aming to explore the solutions of common and individual problems caused by special circumstances such as delaying the start of school and military training and so on due to the epidemic and the other reasons.Counsellors from all Colleges in Grade 2021 were present, and Li Diao, Vice Minister of Academic Affairs, attended the event.

As the presenter, Don Mingyue went to the stage and shared first. With the theme of "From far to near, it is the right time to educate new students", she talked about how her relationship with students has grown from far to near through a series of teaching designs. After analysing the data, she illustrated the particular situation that there are more boys than girls at the College of Computer Science this year, which led to a more in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the current students. She analyzed the problems and characteristics of the students from the College of Computer Science in Grade 2021, such as their tendency to speak anonymously, their deviations in their independent learning ability and awareness, their lack of discipline, and their parents' over-interference in several aspects. As a result, she proposed solutions such as conducting class meetings, setting up an evening self-study system, and having a heart-to-heart talk with individual students.

Whereafter, Wang Li shared her work experience in adaptive education for freshmen. She had concluded a structured and modelled educational pathway based on her years of work experience. She believed that the comprehensive development of university students could not be achieved without the cooperation of group education and individual counselling. Among the group education consisting of safety education, parenting education, and general education, safety education is the course she values most. She talked about how safety education was fundamental and that other education was the icing on the cake.In terms of individual education, she advocated home-school cooperation and the establishment of a time bank so that students could learn the direction of development such as merit awarding and academic planning early, and gradually analyse them in depth.

The counsellors present then discussed and analysed topics ranging from quality credits and classroom locations to student psychological issues, which were very positive and enthusiastic. Gao Ruikuo, the counsellor at the School of Fine Arts, shared his experience and knowledge of working with students psychologically, using the handling of psychological crisis cases as an example, and he truly felt, "It is important to let students share and pour out actively and keep in touch with them." He also suggested that the psychological assessment of freshmen should be carried out in advance to better understand the psychological state of students.

Finally, Li Diao summarized and refined the counsellors' work in two areas: focus and attitude, and expressed heartfelt entrustments and expectations to the counsellors present. He mentioned that with the delay of military training for the freshmen, there was a lack of opportunity for counsellors and students to get to know each other better, so there would have difficulties in organizing, but it was also a test. He also encouraged everyone to show good spirit, to polish their endurance in their work and to make progress through suffering. He repeatedly emphasised that the focus of a counsellor's work was always on the students and that the focus should not be changed because of busy schedules. The first year was crucial, and if you didn't establish a good foundation in time, the problems might erupt in the second year, so it was important to recognise the importance of planning ahead. At the same time, it was also important to take the first step in accompanying students over their four years of growth by summarising cases and accumulating experience from work.
