Uninvited Guests

October 31, 2020

On October 23, 2020, the album Uninvited Guests was released in the name of Glenn Gould. Works of the departed artist kept being released during 38 years after his death, but this new album surprised almost everyone who listened to it. It wasnt another record accomplished by Gould in the studio, but an adventurous compilation of nine tracks using Gould samples in pop, electronic and hip hop settings. For one of those nine tracks of the remix album, the production team from Canada took samples from Sonata No. 1 in C Major for Piano, K. 279:I. Allegro of Mozart played by Gould to make a hip-hop song, in which the vocalist sang better than the rest because Im Baetoven, put up all my strength like Im Baetoven, bet she let me in cauz Im Baetoven……’

Some Gould’s fans consider the newly released album as a piece of art that started something new, while others find it quite offensive, one fan even shouted bluntly in his comment, god, this is sacrilegious!

The album got its name from one of the interviews of Glenn Gould in which he referred to future artists as uninvited guests. Would Gould also feel uneasy or offended about the album just like many of his fans?

Well, Glenn Gould himself, was once regarded as a iconclaster, an eccentric genius, someone that didnt follow the common template. In 1955, he gave performance in the US, playing The Goldberg Variations, and thus bounded into fame. Gould gave concerts all over the world in the following 9 years, but had never come back to the stage after his concert at LA in 1964. Glenn Gould gave up giving concerts altogether, and chose to record complete sets of piano works in studios, which is incredible for an pianist.

Gould also surprised people with his special interpretations of Mozart. Many consider his playing of Mozart very Bach-like, very destructive in comparison with other versions given by other pianists. But Gould played this way not to steal the spotlight, on the contrary, he had an insightful study of music and took every piece needed to be played very seriously.

The eccentric artist, if he’s still alive, may probably express his abomination to the remix done by his ‘uninvited guests’,for he really cherished his works; or he may just happy to meet other iconclasters from the younger generation? We would never know.
