This movie is based on an ancient Celtic mythology. The main story is about a young girl, Saoirse, who is the offspring of a human and a seal elf. After nearly drowning in an accident at sea, she is forced by her grandmother to live in the city. She and her brother, Ben, in search of the way home met three strange elves and embarked on a magical adventure. They traveled through the ancient and magical lost world, met the owl witch, and eventually uncovered the identity of Saoirse, and also learned the reason for their mother's unannounced departure.

Ben did not like his sister at first, he thought it was the birth of his sister that led to the departure of his mother. But in the process of adventure, Ben gradually learned to guard his sister. Afraid of water, he would dive to the bottom of the sea to save his sister. The owl witch, Macha, was distressed by her sad son, so she took away his feelings and turned him into stone. She could not control her emotions and sealed them in a jar. When the jar was broken and all emotions returned, Macha was truly restored as a mother who knew how to love her child.
本一开始并不喜欢妹妹，他认为正是妹妹的出生导致母亲的离开。但是在冒险过程中，本逐渐学会了守护妹妹。怕水的他会为了救妹妹潜入海底。猫头鹰女巫玛查，心疼悲伤的儿子，她就抽去了他的感情将他变成石头。她无法控制自己的情绪，同样将自己的各种情绪抽取封存在罐子里。当罐子被打破，所有的情绪回归，玛查才真正复原成一位懂得如何去爱孩子的母亲。
The theme of this movie is love. Because of love, the father and mother can love each other across races; because of love, Ben grew from a naughty boy to a man with responsibility; because of love, all the elves can return home; because of love, Saoirse chose to stay with her family.
