The story takes place in the late 1980s. Viktor Navorski is an eastern European man who decided to travel to the United States in order to fulfill his father's wish. He bought a plane ticket to the United States with a simple hand luggage. When he got off the plane at New York's JFK airport to exit the terminal, he was stopped. It turned out that there was a coup in his homeland.
故事发生在上个世纪80年代末，维克多·纳沃斯基是一个东欧人，为了实现父亲的愿望，他决定前往美国，带着简单的行李买了飞往美国的机票。当他在终点站纽约的肯尼迪机场下机准备出机场时，却被拦了下来。原来他的祖国发生了政变。
This meant that Victor's passport and identification papers were useless, and he was detained at the airport. Standing in a country that did not belong to him, Victor could not help feeling lost as he watched the strangers coming and going. He had no choice but to stay in the airport, sleeping on a chair in the lobby, showering in the bathroom and making a living by serving passing passengers. All he had was his unfree body and a small suitcase containing a change of clothes, a razor and his now-invalid identification.

During his time at the airport, Victor has been suffering at the hands of airport official Frank Dixon, who saw Victor as a symbol of bad luck and a big problem that he couldn’t control but was desperately trying to solve. But this didn't bother Victor too much. The man was happy to find a huge and rich life world in such a small and condensed physical space. He found it full of generosity and ambition, absurdity and surprise, identity and status, conformism and serendipity. He also had a romantic love affair with stewardess Amelie here. In the end, Victor encountered all the things that are epitome of America and his happiness at this airport.
