Can We Learn Effectively by Watching Videos? 看视频学习有效吗?

In contrast to the stereotype of watching videos for entertainment, recently short video viewers have been increasingly interested in knowledge-based short videos, hoping to gain more meaningful knowledge while being entertained and relaxed. But at the same time, it is sometimes argued the efficiency of these informative videos.  

与为娱乐而看视频的刻板印象不同,最近短视频观众对知识型短视频越来越感兴趣,希望在娱乐和放松的同时获得更多有意义的知识。但同时,也有人质疑这些知识类视频的学习效率。


In view of the visual enjoyment, video viewing is exceedingly attractive and tempting, but may not be appropriate for each person. Admittedly, audio-visual information may be more likely to fascinate individuals. As the saying goes, “interest is the best teacher.” However, a majority of people would get distracted easily, especially young students without adults’ supervision. After all, videos usually provide the fragmentation of learning, thus having a negative impact on the individuals’ long-term development.

因为有视觉上的享受,观看视频是非常有吸引力和诱惑力的,但不一定适合每个人。诚然,视听信息可能更吸引人。俗话说,"兴趣是最好的老师"。然而,大多数人都会很容易分心,特别是没有成年人监督的年轻的学生。毕竟,视频通常只能提供碎片化的学习,从而对长期发展产生负面影响。


Lack of interaction is another concern on the study choice. Unlike the offline classrooms teaching, students who learning through videos can hardly acquire feedback from their “teachers”, which can impede deep learning. Additionally, excessive exposure to screens can affect their health. It is admitted that sitting in front of a screen for many hours every day may lead to obesity, poor eyesight and posture.

缺乏互动是通过视频学习的另一个问题。与线下课堂教学不同,通过视频学习的学生很难获得他们的“老师”的反馈,这是不利于深度学习的。此外,屏幕时间过长也会影响健康。每天在屏幕前坐上好几个小时可能会导致肥胖,视力不佳和不良的体态。


To summarize, I believe it is ill-advised for many people to learn relying on watching videos regarding the demand of learning attentively and in depth.

总而言之,在我看来,对于专注、深度的学习,许多人依赖于观看视频来学习是欠妥的。
