In the Netherlands, cycling is the most prevailing trip mode, whose traveling rate is way ahead in the world. Holland nurtures 16.7 million inhabitants, but there are more than 17 million bicycles in total. As long as on a sunny and clear day, all kinds of bicycles can be seen in the streets.
在荷兰，人们骑自行车出行是很普遍的事情，它的自行车出行率在世界远远领先。荷兰拥有1670万人口，却拥有1700多万辆自行车。在阳光明媚的日子里，大街小巷都可以看到各式各样的自行车。
The generalization of cycling is not only due to the Dutch’s awareness of environmental protection, but also on account of the flat terrain and appealing scenery, coupled with the perfect bicycle road. Apart from a few hills in the most southern part, there is barely any rugged place, which creates a perfect condition for implementing and realizing “Nationwide Cycling”. Furthermore, the bicycle road is the most developed, convenient and the safest in Europe. Statistically, the bicycle road is 3.5 kilometers long, which accounts for 30.6% of the total number of domestic roads. What’s more, it is completely unobstructed to cycle: wherever a car can or cannot reach, all bicycles can reach freely and easily.
骑行的普遍化不仅是因为荷兰人崇尚环保事业，更重要的是荷兰平坦的大地、秀美的郊野，以及完善的自行车道令人们爱上了自行车这种出行方式。荷兰没有山，只是在最南部有一点点丘陵，这为“全民自行车”的推行与实现创造了良好的地理条件。此外，荷兰的自行车路是欧洲最完善，安全和便利的。据统计，荷兰的自行车路有3.5万公里，占荷兰全国道路总长度的30.6％，甚至比轿车公里还长。自行车路全程畅通无阻，轿车能到的当地自行车必定能到，而轿车到不了的地方，自行车也能到达。
Some people may worry about the chaos caused by so many bikes. But in fact, the Dutch Ministry of Transport formulated the “Bicycle Expert Program” to innovate bikes, set bicycle parking lots and allow bikes to be brought on trains. Where there’s a train station, there is a parking lot and a rental store for bicycles. Moreover, since 2004, police have left locked bikes with secret GPS emitters in bike theft hotspots to bait thieves and track them down in the latest effort to stamp out rampant bike theft.
也许有人会疑惑，这么多的自行车，难道不会出现各种自行车乱象吗？事实上，荷兰交通部制订了“自行车专家计划”，包括新款自行车的研制、增设自行车停车场和租赁场、允许将自行车带上火车等。在荷兰，像火车站等地方，都有专门的自行车停车场和租赁市场。除此之外，针对偷窃自行车的乱象，从2004年开始，警方便把上了锁、暗装GPS发射器的自行车放在自行车偷盗多发地段,如老城中心，并以此为诱饵，让小偷们自投罗网。
The bicycle culture in the Netherlands not only attracts tourists from all over the world, but also contributes to the environment protection of the nation and the world. Faced with the severe global warming, I sincerely hope that the governments and people all over the world would take action to protect our Mother Earth like the people in Holland do.
