August 29, 2022 Hua Siyao

The beginning of the new term being on the horizon, some students may have been disturbed by the time anxiety. In particular, it is the future time anxiety or the existential time anxiety.

When we are faced with the sense of lost time slipping away and never returning, we could experience the existential time anxiety. We may have always struggled with one thought, which is “It’s too late”, regretting that we have wasted too much time to do what we ever wanted. Admittedly, it is common for the majority of students especially at the end of the holidays. With reference to the future time anxiety, it is the fear of what may or may not happen in the future. Worried about a myriad of unknown challenges and variable life during the new term, some of the students may also suffer from it.

However, there is no use to avoid and escape, and the only way to conquer the anxiety is to confront it. In essence, the time anxiety is the fear of wasting your time, denoting that you may be obsessed about spending your time in the most meaningful way possible. Therefore, it can be transformed into an exceedingly positive attitude towards your life once reducing the time anxiety while still finding meaning in your day-to-day life.

For one thing, please think again what “time well spent” means to you. At some time, doing what really makes you happy and gets you in the flow may be more useful for your well-being and development.

For another, cut out time-consuming distractions. Check the behaviors of yourself and keep concentrating on the things you really enjoy. The moments spent mindlessly, for instancethose spent on scrolling on social media and watching random short videos, should be reduced.

Generally speaking, spending more mental energy on the instant gratification can be anxiety-inducing, which is contrast to doing things that make us happy.
